paper cut out animals and birds on a red surface with one animal in the middle

For this flannel, I used Matthew Porter's simple and lovely board book: Tails Chasing Tails. I made each of the animals from the book and then cut them in half (which, even though necessary, was still a little heartbreaking, honestly). The book starts with the elephant chasing the tiger: When the kids have guessed who that tail belongs to, I add the head: Here are the other animals chasing/being chased: And it ends with the mouse chasing a gray tail... Which brings the whole thing full…

three colorful crabs on a blue background with white spider webs in the bottom right corner

When I was making the spiderweb for my elephants, I decided to make a set of spiders to go with the web. I used a clipart image for my pattern. Puff paint details & wiggle eyes. I use this set with the rhyme "Five Little Spiders Jumping on the Web." Important Links: Flannel Friday Blog/Website Flannel Friday Tumblr Flannel Friday Pinterest Flannel Friday Facebook Group

the book cap for sale is next to a tree

Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina has been in print for over 50 yeras and was a storytime favorite of mine when I was a kid going to library programs. Even though it's an older book, it's super interactive and so clever. (NOTE: I just read the reviews on Amazon and a few people complained that the publisher cut some text and refrains so it's shorter than the book I remember from my childhood. No complaints here though!) This flannel works best with a helper to arrange the pieces while you…

two pieces of paper cut to look like shoes and fish on top of each other

I have not generally been in the habit of creating a brand-new flannel board each week - mostly because my coworkers have been doing this a lot longer than I have, and as such, have amassed quite the collection of awesome flannel boards. I did have an idea for our camping week, however, that I really wanted to try out. Unfortunately, I was out the day my story time was scheduled, so my coworker ended up doing it for me. She said it went pretty well, though I have a feeling this is one better…

an elephant with a hat on its head

(Apparently formatting is not my friend today because my pictures REFUSE to orient properly. I apologize for the turning of the head required to read this post.) I read somewhere that "Hooray for Hat!" would make a great flannel and I thought "OMG yes it would!" So here's my version (as of yet untested - my Story Time sessions start next week). When Elephant woke up he was grumpy... But there's a knock on the door and he gets a present: a hat!! So he goes to show Zebra (who is grumpy)…

felt fruits and vegetables are arranged in the shape of a rainbow on a gray surface

This year, the Library Village will be at the PLA in Indianapolis, Indiana the week I would've planned a St. Patrick's Day story time. So, instead of forgetting the holiday altogether, I decided to do a rainbow story time with a hint of St. Patrick's Day green! I was so excited to find Storytime ABC's flannel story Rainbow Stew. I knew immediately that it would be perfect for my story time. I can't wait to make some rainbow stew with the little ones.. I know they are going to love it…

this is an art project for kids to make with construction paper and cut out cars

I decided to make some new flannel sets for our community flannel board. My hope is that if we change the sets out every month, we'll encourage more participation and the pieces will last longer. So far the kiddos have been loving this neighborhood scene! I spent a very enjoyable ten minutes on Wednesday listening…

an animal themed placemat is shown with various animals around the window and on the floor

I was inspired to make this felt set by Katie over at Storytime Secrets. Katie created a Google Drive Presentation, but I opted to go with my favorite medium...felt! The window is a clipart image. I used clipart or coloring sheets to make the following pieces: ox, coon, loon, cony, and raindrop. I borrowed the others from the following sets: Cat from "I Planted a Whistle" by Jack Prelutsky Rat from "Goodnight Mummy" by Roger Stevens Fox & Hare from Conejito by Margaret Read MacDonald Pony…

a window with the words who is taping at my window?

This week, I am sharing another flannel board idea based on a poem I recently read to my daughter. It is entitled "Who is Tapping at my Window?" and was written by A.G. Deming. It can be found in A Child's Book of Poems by Gyo Fujikawa, and thanks to Google Books, you can read it online. I like this poem as a read-aloud because it's very repetitive and has a strong rhythm that becomes really obvious when speaking the words out loud. It also reinforces kids' understanding of familiar animals…
