Ode to Plantain 🌱 . An experimental weaving from I idea I had when wandering around the meadows here. The stems are so strong and over a meter long I thought ‘I bet I could weave with these!’. Sure enough they worked beautifully on my hand made rigid heddle loom. The weaving is 100 x 70cm, warped with British white wool yarn. Did you know what our baskets are made of?  The indigenous sisal plant is a perennial succulent (Agave sisalana). It has a life span of 7-10yrs  produces 200-250 leaves. Each leaf has an average of 1000 fibres.  After harvesting, the process to extract  obtain the fibre is a sincere labour of love (all done by hand). The fibre is traditionally used for ropes  twine. #SustainableLiving  The fibre is dried, brushed, dyed  twisted.
