Jorōgumo is a type of Yōkai, a creature, ghost or goblin of Japanese folklore. According to some stories, a Jorōgumo is a spider that can change its appearance into that of a seductive woman. The Edo period legend has it that a beautiful woman would entice a man into a quiet shack and begin to play a Biwa, a type of Japanese lute. Spider is sacred in many cultures. Being a weaver means that she (and sometimes he) is related to creation, fate, and creativity, especially as a spinner of stories or as a trickster. Having eight legs means that spider also represents the eight spoked wheel of the year and the eight virtues. Spider is fast, with a strong web, but a delicate body. Spider is also a patron of all that is dark and hidden. There is no other creature for which I feel, at the same time, so much fear and love.

Trolls can survive extreme weather conditions and therefore tend to settle as far as possible from human settlements. Nocturnal by necessity since sunlight will turn them instantly to...

Now THAT is a title I can get behind, people. That sounds like something I would write! 'Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You'. BRILLIANT. Remember how last week I mentioned 'Spiderwick Chronicles' by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black??? Well, when I was looking up the links to those books, I also found that this lovely book exists. And when my kid sees it, she is going to LOSE HER MIND. She loves this kind of thing. A year ago, 'A Dignity of Dragons' was Julia's…

#8 𝕁𝕠𝕣𝕠𝕘𝕦𝕞𝕠 The eighth and final sketch of Inktober, Jorōgumo is a type of yōkai (a type of spirit) in Japanese mythology, which takes the form of a spider. It can shapeshift into a beautiful, seductive woman when it wants to eat humans, young men specifically. It kills its prey with a deadly venom, enjoying the slow death. Even when it is in its human form, its reflection will show a giant spider. It can not be killed by any kind of poison.

Or, The Girl Who Told the Truth about the Gods By Nicole Saldarriaga, Contributing Writer, Classical Wisdom I’d take a look at the humble spider. Though spiders may not qualify as the most terrifying of creatures, their inclusion in a popular myth about Roman goddess, Minerva, certainly clues us into what the Greeks and Romans
