Easter Week Palm Quilts, Day Three

Image
Today is Good Friday and the last day of my Palm quilts. This next quilt was made almost 20 years ago and was a faithful sample when I taught my workshops. It was one of my favorite quilts. When a pastor friend of ours lost his mother last year, I thought of this quilt as it has religious meaning and I know he would treasure it. I like to give quilts in these occasions instead of flowers. 4 Block Palm Quilt: 45" x 45". 2004 I used some shot cottons to create the blocks in this next quilt. Then I chose big, bold prints to set those blocks on point. These are also 10" blocks, but the pattern creates the same quilt using 7" size (so that you can print them from your home printer!) The following quilts are my workshop samples. (I do sell printed packs of this pattern using the 10" size). Big Block Palms : 33" x 43" And two more quilts that I share in my trunk show lectures. Big Block Palm with 10" blocks: 62" x 62" ( Workshop Sample ) And ...

Easter Week Palm Quilts - Day 1

You don't have to celebrate Easter to enjoy looking at all the Hosannah/Palm quilts I've made over the years. This is based on the traditional (vintage) Palm block that was made with templates. OOOHHHH! Here's a photo of the way this was presented about 100 years ago. This is from Ruby McKim (though she did not create the original). And here's a cover of another quilt block booklet from that long ago. And that has a page with those pesky templates for making this! Bible Favorites Blocks booklet from 100 years ago I have made many, many blocks and about a dozen quilts using this lovely Palm block. I converted everything to foundation paper piecing and didn't have to worry about the points. The first versions I made were split down the center. Here's a digital file from 1999. Foundation paper pieced Palm block in 2 sections I even have a single block that I use when I teach this workshop. Can you see the diagonal seam running from top left to bottom right? Here it...

Shot Cotton Week: Day 1

Image
No, not from the barrel from a gun! These are cotton fabrics that are truly woven with two different threads - one color is "shot" in and out of a second one. Check it out with this bundle of Artisan Cottons (still around in quilt shops). What's with the red threads coming out of that purple fat quarter on the right? Well, that piece of fabric gets its color from those red threads woven in and out of another color. Amazing, right? Artisan Cottons by Windham Fabrics Here's one of the fabulous creations I made using these colors. This is my 10" Palm block which is paper pieced. (I've taken the papers off and you can see how it's pieced like an off center log cabin.) It's one of the classes I'm teaching this week in Raleigh for the Sewing Expo. And here's the quilt I made using 8 of these blocks. I set them on point and used a multi-print to spice it up a bit. My students will be stitching these 10" blocks but I can't offer this size vi...

Fat Quarter Friendly Palm Blocks

Image
Another day, another fun quilt from long ago magazines. This was my Palm Block Pillow made with some batiks from Bali Fabrics. We had great relationships with many fabric companies. They sent us their latest collections and we created projects to feature on our pages. They took out ads and that paid our bills! 6" Palm Blocks in a pillow Then I made a larger block using a 10" size. This was a popular workshop in 2007.  Palm block on point in a flanged pillow I sewed several and set them into this quilt. Didn't think you could put 7 blocks together like this, did you? I resurrected it for making a larger quilt and it's a workshop for the upcoming Raleigh Sewing Expo using the 10" size. But I do have it in the 7" block size in my Etsy shop . I was using fat quarters of these shot cottons to make these Palm Blocks. I used a few Kaffe Fassett printsLots of color! 8 Block Palm Quilt : 33" x 43" I don't sell the pattern in the 10" size. You'd...
