Starz has canceled the popular crime drama BMF.
The series has been canceled after four seasons. Premiering in 2021, BMF – which stands for Black Mafia Family – starred Da’Vinchi and Demetrius Flenory Jr. as two brothers who created one of the most influential crime families in the country in the 1980s. The show is based on the true story of Black Mafia Family founders Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory.
Rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson served as a producer on the series.
BMF also starred Russell Hornsby, La La Anthony, Michole Briana White and Steve Harris.
Starz recently aired Season 4 of the series which ended in August on a major cliffhanger that showed Big Meech getting arrested. Though Starz was reportedly “pleased with Season 4 creatively,” it wasn’t enough for the network to renew the show for another season.
As Deadline pointed out, Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch spoke about wanting to “replace” shows as they enter three to four seasons with newer series to manage ballooning costs.
“When seasons go from one to two to three to four [seasons], three to four is where the cost really pops because most of the actors get bigger raises, and you have to really manage that. So, you have to have in your portfolio of development shows that can actually replace shows as they get into later seasons,” he said, per Deadline.
Jackson has expressed interest in creating more spinoff series based on BMF, as has been done for Power.
The producer already has other projects underway at Starz, including the Power franchise.
His next project is the British boxing drama Fightland, which was picked up for series.
