‘Underwater’
I admittedly missed Underwater when it premiered in 2020, but it recently piqued my attention when I learned the film was an Alien-style horror film starring Kristen Stewart who’s fleeing none other than Lovecraft’s Cthulu. The film takes place on an underwater rig that is drilling into Mariana’s Trench, but when the rig becomes flooded and kills off most of the team, engineer Norah Price is forced to walk the ocean floor with the remaining survivors as Cthulu and its herd attempt to pick them off one by one. The movie closely resembles deep space survival movies that many sci-fi fans are already well-acquainted with, but the special effects and Cthulu’s character design are quite impressive, making for a jarring reminder that the film takes place six miles below the ocean’s surface as opposed to lightyears away in space. Underwater is an isolating and creepy watch that does not overstay its welcome at a tight 95 minutes.
