    Resumen Las ontologías son instrumentos que describen de manera formal los conceptos dentro de un dominio, las relaciones entre éstos y sus límites. Entre sus propósitos está generar una representación abstracta del campo de conocimiento que pueda ser comprendida tanto por seres humanos como por herramientas digitales, se trata de un sistema complejo de términos con explicaciones que definen un tema y que permiten mejorar la búsqueda, recuperación, visualización y análisis referentes a un campo o dominio, incluyendo la educación en profesiones de la salud. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo abordar aspectos y consideraciones generales sobre el diseño, el desarrollo y la construcción de ontologías, además aborda la importancia de estos instrumentos y atiende algunas dificultades en su definición y su clasificación.

    Abstract Ontologies are tools that describe knowledge domains, considering the concepts and relationships among them, as well as their limits. They provide an abstract representation of a field of knowledge, that can be understood by humans and digital devices. As complex systems that posit the terms used by an academic community to define and describe a topic, they facilitate search, recovery, visualization and analysis of knowledge domains, including health professions education. The goal of this paper is to discuss the relevance of these tools for scientific disciplines, to provide an overview of the design, development and construction of ontologies, and to analyze the challenges and difficulties in their definition and classification.
