  • Resumen
    • The study of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is burgeoning with significant impacts for both society and stakeholders. This paper considers recent evidence on raising an ASD child/adolescent, highlightingthe impact on the parents, since their child’s diagnosis accompanies their daily life. The clinical manifestationsof ASD (stereotypical behavior-restricted interests, impaired reciprocal social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication skills, associated with hyperactivity, aggressive behavior towards themselves or others, intellectual disability, sensory alterations and sleep disorders) imply directly that the presence of an individualwith this condition in the family negatively affects family functioning and the emotional well-being and socialactivities of family members. ASD can be a crushing experience for the parents, considering that it requiresa lifelong caregiving commitment and imposes significant stressors on family members. As a consequence, itcan generate insecurity in the parents and emotional symptoms, leading to decreased efficacy, increased stressand both mental and physical health issues.
