Digital Collections

This digital collection gathers materials from Hagley Library's collections by and about Alice Hamilton (1869-1970), a physician, research scientist, and social-welfare reform activist who specialized in the field of occupational health. Her work eventually made her a pioneer in the field of industrial toxicology. In 1897, she was hired as a professor at the Woman's Medical School of Northwestern University in Chicago. While there, she also took on a residency at Chicago's Hull House.. In 1919, she became the first woman appointed to the faculty of Harvard University, taking the role of assistant professor in a newly formed Department of Industrial Medicine. In 1910, Hamilton was appointed as a medical investigator to the Illinois Commission on Occupational Diseases. By 1916, she had become the nation's leading expert in occupational lead exposure, and was later hired as a special investigator for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition to her scientific work, Hamilton was a humanitarian and peace activist.

Amalgamated Leather Companies, Inc. manufactured black and colored glazed kid and other classes of leather used largely in making shoes in the early to mid-twentieth century. The company began doing business as the F.J. Blatz & Brother Co. in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where they made kid leather. In 1919, F.J. Blatz & Brother Co. took over the business of F. Blumenthal & Co., a Wilmington, Delaware business founded in 1890 that manufactured black and colored glazed kid and other classes of leather used largely in making shoes. The firm then reincorporated in Wilmington as the Amalgamated Leather Companies. Manufacturing ceased in 1966, and Amalgamated Leather Companies, Inc., was dissolved in 1967.

The trade journal The American Brewer was founded by Adolph Meckert in New York City in 1867 to serve the nation's growing beer brewing industry. As many of the country's brewers were German immigrants, the journal began publication in German, under the title Der Amerikanische Bierbrauer. Within a year of its founding, it was purchased by its writer and editor, the Bohemian immigrant Anton Schwarz, a trained brewer who would go on to establish the United States Brewers’ Academy in 1882. Schwarz, who died in 1895, passed ownership and editorial responsibilities of the journal to his sons, Robert and Frederick. Each journal issue contains scientific articles, production figures, industry news from around the world, and advertisements from brewery suppliers and manufacturers of brewery equipment.

The American Car & Foundry Company purchased the Jackson and Sharp Company of Wilmington, Delaware, in 1901. From the end of World War One to 1938, the plant built small pleasure boats. During World War Two, it built building landing barges, LCM tank lighters, aluminum pontoons, plywood smoke barges for the American forces, and YMS minesweepers for the British Navy. The plant was closed around 1945. The American Car and Foundry Company World War II era photographs (Accession 1993.257) collection document activities at the company's shipyard in Wilmington, Delaware, during World War Two. Images show ship launchings and shipbuilding, views of the plant, caricatures of employees, and other business activities.

The American Iron and Steel Institute is a trade association of North American steel producers. The group’s mission includes advocating for public policy, education and innovation for the iron and steel industry. The Institute was established under Elbert H. Gary (1846-1927) in 1908, after the Panic of 1907 brought an end to industry-wide consolidations. The restructuring of the industry after 1970 has somewhat diluted the Institute's impact, with separate organizations now representing minimills and other specialties. Still, the American Iron and Steel Institute remains the major industry trade association. The American Iron and Steel Institute photographs and audiovisual materials (Accession: 1986.268) collection consists of photographs, research notes, audio, film, and video which document the history of the steel industry. It has not been digitized in its entirety.

The Associated Factory Mutual Fire Insurance Companies comprised twenty-eight mutual insurance firms that specialized in industrial fire insurance. The association maintained a central testing laboratory for testing and accrediting fire control apparatus and electrical equipment, engineering and appraisal departments, and a Plan Division to produce and distribute fire insurance maps and plans of insured properties. The Associated Factory Mutual Fire Insurance Companies maps and plans (Accession 2087) collection consists of seventy plans and maps, mostly depicting textile mills, paper products factories, and foundries in New England and New York

Founded in 1918 by William H. Stayton, the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment was an early advocacy group for prohibition repeal in the United States. It became a leading and nationally prominent organization for the cause in the mid-1920s after attracting a number of prominent Americans to it membership, including Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954), Irénée du Pont (1876-1963), and John J. Raskob (1879-1950) The Association Against the Prohibition Amendment postcards and stationery (Accession 2005.204) collection collection comprises postcards and folded cards (stationery) issued by the organization. Each item is headed with the saying "Prohibition-Probes," which is followed by an anti-prohibition slogan or quotation.

Henry Belin du Pont (1898-1970) began Atlantic Aviation in 1927 to provide services for business aviation. In 1948, the company moved from the Du Pont Airport to New Castle County Airport south of Wilmington, Delaware and soon expanded to other airports around the country, continuing today as a major aircraft maintenance and sales provider. The Atlantic Aviation Corporation photographs (Accession 1999.223) collection includes portraits and views of Atlantic Aviation facilities at various airports. It also includes photographs of Charles Lindbergh's stop at Du Pont Airport in 1927.

The Austin Powder Company is a Cleveland, Ohio-based manufacturer of various industrial explosives and detonators, as well as a provider of blasting services around North America. It is the oldest manufacturing enterprise in the Cleveland area. The Austin Powder Company was founded in 1833 by five brothers. By the 1860s, the company had grown considerably, and was continuing to expand. The Austin Powder Company album (Accession 1973.231) documents the establishment of a new set of mills, constructed in 1892 in Cuyahoga County near Solon, Ohio.

The Automatic Merchandising Company operated and installed vending machines. A signature product was the Auto-Snak, a set of food vending machines which dispensed soda, coffee, milk, sandwiches, soup, salads, pastries and ice cream. The Automatic Merchandising Company album (Accession 2017.202) is a promotional salesman sample album from the company's Detroit Branch, and features automatic food vending machines for factories, universities, and offices. The album shows close-up views of Auto-Snak machines and the products they vended. There is also an article about the Budd plant installing the machines and a report about solving issues related to feeding employees. The contents have been removed from the album for preservation, but the original order of the album has been maintained.

Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn Inc. (BBDO) is an advertising agency network headquartered in New York City. The company began in 1891 as the George Batten Company and merged with Barton, Durstine & Osborn in 1928. In the decades since, BBDO has expanded to include locations in eighty-one countries providing advertising agency services as well as support services such as public relations, direct marketing, sales promotion, graphic arts, graphic design, and printing. The Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn, Inc. records (Accession 2752) collection includes advertisement tear sheets, films, ledgers, marketing reports, personnel files, photographs, press coverage, publications, research reports, slides, and speeches dating from 1892 to 2019. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

The Brandywine Valley stereo photographs (Accession 1970.134) collection consists of scenic stereo views from a published series entitled <em>Beauties of the Brandywine, Delaware</em>, produced by the Philadelphia photography studio of Bartlett & French around 1868. The images, many of which were taken on E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company property, feature posed individuals, mill buildings, and the natural landscape along Brandywine Creek.

This digital collection contains a series of interviews conducted in 2015 and 2016 on the business of craft brewing in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. The collection includes interviews with brewers and brewery owners from Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Additionally, interviews were conducted that cover packaging (canning), distribution, retail sales, and the politics around regulating the alcohol business. The Beer and craft brewing oral history interviews (Accession 2016.287) collection was developed by Gregory Hargreaves, Hagley's former Oral Historian. Hargreaves also conducted the interviews for the project.

The Berkshire Knitting Mills was once part of a triad of companies in Reading and Wyomissing, Pennsylvania owned by Henry Janssen (1866-1948) and Ferdinand Thun (1866-1949) known as Wyomissing Industries, which also included the Textile Machine Work and the Narrow Fabric Company. Built and incorporated between 1892 and 1906, these companies expanded rapidly between 1900 and 1930, becoming was the world’s largest manu­facturer of women’s hosiery. The Berkshire Knitting Mills photographic album (Accession 1992.249) is a bound album of documentation and captioned views depicting the Berkshire Knitting Mills factory, workers, and manufacturing processes in the years 1906 to 1923, a period in which the Mills were celebrated as the largest full-fashioned knitting mill in the world.

The Bethlehem Steel Corporation was a holding company formed in 1904 to control the older Bethlehem Steel Company and a number of shipyards nationwide. At the turn of the century, under the direction of Charles M. Schwab (1862-1939) and Eugene Grace (1876-1960), the corporation became the second largest American steel company. Combined with its other venture, Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., it became a leading twentieth century American business. This digital collection contains materials selected from two physical collections: Bethlehem Steel Company color transparencies and slides (Accession 1992.250) and the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Bethlehem Ship Corporation photographs (Accession 1980.300). These collections have not been digitized in their entirety.

In 1816, Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) financially supported the construction of the Brandywine Manufacturers Sunday School on his property. In 1817, the school began offering the children of local workers non-sectarian instruction in reading, writing, arithmetic, and religion. In 1823, the school became affiliated with the American Sunday School Union. The development of a public school system in 1829 resulted in gradual changes to the school; classes continued but were restricted to religious subjects. After the completion of Christ Church in 1856, the school became an Episcopal church school. The Brandywine Manufacturers Sunday School (BMSS) records (Accession 0389) are records primarily generated and maintained by the du Pont women; they include the school's constitution, financial records, student records, lesson notebooks, and correspondence. The Oral histories on work and daily life in the Brandywine Valley (Accession 1970.370) collection is made of a series of oral history interviews conducted by Hagley staff between 1954 and 1990. These interviews feature individuals who had worked at the DuPont Company powder yards on Brandywine Creek during the yards’ final decades of operation, or who had lived near the yards as spouses or children of DuPont Company workers. Some of the individuals who were interviewed donated, lent for copying, or provided information about photographs depicting the workers' communities and powder yards. These photographs now form the Brandywine Valley oral history interviewees' photographs (Accession 2017.255) collection.

Buckley Music System, Inc. was a manufacturer and distributor of jukebox music systems for businesses. The company operations were active from approximately 1939 through 1950. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, Buckley had several distributors in various regions around the United States. The jukebox stations were tied into a central system, including jukes, and a full line of auxiliary wall and or bar boxes, and speakers. The Buckley Music System, Inc. album (Accession 2016.301) is a salesman sample catalogue marketing the Buckley jukebox system for restaurants, bars, and clubs. The album consists of thirty-two photographs showing the interiors of establishments who installed the system, as well as photographs of company employees and an image of a wall-mounted speaker cabinet. The album was temporarily disbound for scanning, but the photographs have been kept in their original order.

The Budd Company was a manufacturer of steel automobiles, passenger rail cars, and other transportation products. The company began in 1912, in Philadelphia as the Edward G. Budd Manufacturing Company specializing in the manufacturing of all-steel body automobiles. The company became a major producer of automobile parts as well as a manufacturer of stainless steel passenger railroad cars and other products. This digital collection contains photographs from a number of collections that originated from the Budd company archive, and which document a broad range of the company's activities. The Budd Company photographs (Accession 1999.228) collection is a physical collection at Hagley Library that has not been digitized in its entirety. The Budd Company digital photographs (Accession 2020.213) collection is a digital-only collection that was provided to the library on a loan for copy basis, and has been included in its entirety.

In 1901, Congress founded the National Bureau of Standards, known since 1988 as the National Institute of Standards and Technology.It is a non-regulatory U.S. Department of Commerce agency intended "to establish an authoritative domestic measurement and standards laboratory." In 1928, the Bureau’s Fire Resistance Division burned down two condemned brick buildings in Washington D.C. to study the results. This action was likely the first full-scale fire test ever conducted. The data gathered during these fires was compared against theoretical time-temperature curves that were used at the time, and was eventually used to create uniform fire resistance standards for buildings. The Bureau of Standards fire test of steel furniture album (Accession 1993265) documents tests conducted by the bureau between 1926 and 1927 concerning the effect of fire on steel furniture. Captioned images show the aftermath of a fire test in an office with furniture supplied by the National Association of Steel Furniture Manufacturers.

This digital collection includes consists of issues of Business Screen magazine, a trade publication for the industrial film industry, that were published between 1938 and 1973. We would like to thank Rick Prelinger for his generosity in making this resource available. Hagley Library's Business Screen magazine (Accession 2017.227) collection is entirely digital. Original materials are housed with the Prelinger Archives, which also provided the digital copy.

Canada Dry is a brand of soft drinks best known for its ginger ale. Canada Dry had its beginning in Toronto, Canada when John McLaughlin (1865-1914) opened a small carbonated water plant in 1890. He created Canada Dry Pale Dry Ginger Ale in 1904. P.D. Saylor and Associates purchased the company from the McLaughlin family and formed Canada Dry Ginger Ale, Inc. in 1923. Much of its consumption during this time was due to its popularity as a mixer to mask the taste of home brew during Prohibition. The 1930s saw the introduction of other Canada Dry mixers and a period of worldwide expansion. The Canada Dry beverages sales album (Accession 1995.248) is a 1938 marketing flip chart for Canada Dry distributors' sales agents. It contains images of Canada Dry products, bottling plants, the manufacturing process, advertising campaigns, and point of purchase "sales boosters", as well as merchants' testimonials and statistical marketing information for retailers.

Cape Charles was established in 1884 as the southern terminus of the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad. The town quickly expanded as an increasing number of passenger and freight trains arrived daily to be carried across the Chesapeake on barges and steamships to Norfolk. In 1922, the railroad became a part of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and Cape Charles became headquarters for the Pennsylvania Railroads's Norfolk Division. The Cape Charles, Virginia, historic photographs (Accession 1972.250.2) collection consists of forty-three photographs taken between 1885 and 1886, showing the early development of Cape Charles. Views of the wharf and harbor areas and the steamship "Cape Charles" built by Harlan and Hollingsworth of Wilmington, Delaware, comprise nearly half the collection.

Carol Litchfield (1936-2012) was a biologist and biochemist specifically interested in halophilic microbiology (microorganisms that live in salt rich environments). Later in her life her interest in halophiles transformed into a fascination with the history of salt, which inspired her to collect a wide range of ephemera and documentation related to salt, from images of salt production and advertisements from salt companies, to salt shakers and actual pieces of salt rock. Litchfield's personal papers and her collection now form the Hagley Library's Carol Litchfield collection on the history of salt (Accession 2012.219), which includes ephemera, postcards, films, advertisements, photographs, documents and objects featuring salt products. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

<ol>As an organic chemist, Carter Litchfield (1932-2007) studied and specialized in edible fats. Over the course of his career, Litchfield built a substantial collection about the history of fats and fatty materials. This collection now form our Carter Litchfield collection on the history of fatty materials (Accession 2007.227), containing his collection of photographs and ephemera, and Carter Litchfield collection on the history of fatty materials (Accession 2413), containing works related to his research and publication activities. This digital collection is a curated selection of items from these collections, which have not been fully digitized, and primarily includes paper ephemera and trade catalogs. There are also items relating to the Prussian chemist, Julius Lewkowitsch (1857-1913), whose collection Litchfield acquired.

The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 celebrated the one hundreth anniversary of American Independence. Held in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, it was the first major U.S. world's fair. Nearly ten million visitors visited the fairgrounds, which were made up of five main buildings, as well as some 250 pavilions and auxiliary structures, including twenty-four state buildings, each designed in a regional style. The Centennial Exhibition photographs and ephemera (Accession 2003.255) collection consists of photographs and ephemera pertaining to the Centennial International Exhibition. This collection has not been scanned in its entirety.

The Chamber of Commerce of the United States of America formed in 1912 with the purpose of advising the government on issues facing industry and business throughout the country. The majority of images in this digital collection are photographs taken for the Chamber’s publication, Nation’s Business.. Published from 1912 to 1999, the monthly magazine featured images by many of the country’s most prominent photographers, and proved invaluable as a public relations tool and a means of communicating the Chamber's agenda to members of the business and legislative communities. This digital collections features selected materials from the Chamber of Commerce of the United States photographs and audiovisual material (Accession 1993.230) collection and from additional publications that may be found by searching Hagley Library's catalog. Charles Blasius & Sons began in Philadelphia in 1855, and manufactured pianos under their own brand name, as well as "Ideal" and "Regent." In 1887, they bought the trade name "Albrecht", which was one of the oldest piano makers in the United States. In 1888, the company expanded its operations to include a factory in Woodbury, New Jersey. Around 1916, the company and its properties were purchased by the Rice-Wuest Company, which continued making pianos under the Blasius brands until that company's closure in 1919. The Photographs of the Charles Blasius & Sons piano factory in Woodbury, New Jersey (Accession 2006.206) collection consists of fourteen photographs showing interior and exterior views of the company's factory in Woodbury, New Jersey. The photographs were taken around 1895 by James L. Dillon, a commercial photographer in Philadelphia.

An aerial photographer hobbyist turned professional, Charles Findeisen (1919-2007) spent most of his life flying airplanes. He consulted for real estate development firms, engineering firms, and construction companies, and virtually all of his work was in the tri-state region of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Many of the images in the Charles Findeisen aerial photographs (Accession 2009.223) collection depict local airports; many other images have associated coordinates identifying the precise location where the photograph was taken. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

Cinécraft Productions was founded in 1939 by Ray Culley (1904-1983) and Betty (Buehner) Culley (1914-2016) in Cleveland, Ohio. The firm specialized in commercial productions for business, industry, trade organizations, and, in some cases, government agencies and social service organizations. The company has been in continuous operation since then, making it the “country's longest-standing corporate film & video production house”. Hagley Library's collections of material generated by, or in association with, Cinécraft Productions include The Cinecraft, Inc. films (Accession 2019.227) collection, the Culley family collection of Cinecraft Productions audiovisual materials (Accession 2018.201), Cinecraft oral histories (Accession 2021.206) collection, Robert A. Schneider collection of Cinecraft Production audiovisual materials (Accession 2018.202), the Frank Siedel papers (Accession 2022.215), and scattered items in our Sponsored and industrial motion picture film collection (Accession 2018.222). The collections that have been digitized appear below. None of them have been digitized in their entirety, and new additions continue to be made to some collections.

The City Planning Vertical File (Accession 2184) collection was formerly part of the library of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission. The file contains pamphlets, reports, and prospectuses relating to all aspects of city and regional planning, with emphasis on transportation and other infrastructure, land use and zoning, urban renewal, housing, slum clearance, industry and commerce, central business districts and suburban shopping centers. The publications represent federal, state, regional and local government agencies, private engineering, architectural and planning consultants, quasi-public and non-profit associations, regional authorities, chambers of commerce, and university departments. The bulk of the materials date from the 1950s through the 1970s, the heyday of urban renewal and federally-​sponsored planning. There are also a few developers' brochures on built or projected building complexes and industrial parks. The majority of the publications deal with Philadelphia and the surrounding counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. However, significant coverage is available for other metropolitan areas, including Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Greater New York, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

This digital collection includes a small but significant selection of letters, photographs, pictorial envelopes, and other primary sources from the Hagley Library connected to the Civil War. Many of the items relate to du Pont family members, soldiers who served with them, or powdermen who worked in the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company powder yards during the war. Of particular interest is the correspondence of Rear Admiral Samuel Francis du Pont with one of his naval officers, Percival Drayton. The items were digitized in conjunction with Hagley's exhibit, An Oath of Allegiance to the Republic: the du Ponts and the Civil War

Conagra was founded as the Nebraska Consolidated Mills (NCM) in 1919 via the conglomeration of four grain milling companies headquartered in Grand Island, Nebraska. As American consumers began turning to prepackaged foods in the 1950s, the company pivoted its product line away from grains and flour to meat products. By 1971, its product lines had shifted enough to bring about a corporate renaming, adopting ConAgra Foods by using a portmanteau of "consolidated" and "agriculture". However, the company soon entered a period of decline, exacerbated by failed efforts to expand into the meat and meat by-products industries. Beginning with the purchase of Banquet Foods in 1980, the company once again shifted its product lines, gradually becoming a holding company that specializes in making and distributing consumer packaged foods under various brand names. This born-digital collection consists of annual reports issued by the company since 2005

The Conference Board was founded in 1916 by eleven major trade associations in the United States as the National Industrial Conference Board. It became The Conference Board in 1970. The Conference Board organizes conferences and events which center around three major topics: Corporate Leadership, Economy and Business Environment, and Human Capital. The conference speakers are leading business and subject experts and seek to discuss emerging trends, challenges, and solutions. Additionally, as part of its ongoing function as a lobbying group and publicist for American business, it produces research reports on economic and social issues facing the United States. The Conference Board audio recordings (Accession 1986.231) primarily contains audio recordings and accompanying materials on paper documenting conferences, meetings, workshops, and forums hosted or attended by the Conference Board. This collection has not been fully digitized; its finding aid is unpublished.

Incorporated in October 1974, the Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) was formed under the auspices of the United States Railway Association, a quasi-public agency established for the purpose of solving the problems of bankrupt railroads in the Northeast and Midwest. The assets of six major bankrupt railroads were transferred to Conrail at condemnation value on April 1, 1976 The resulting Conrail system, covered about 20,000 route-miles. Most of this mileage, as well as its Philadelphia headquarters, were inherited from the Penn Central Transportation Company. The Conrail photographs (Accession 1993.231) collection consists of a large number of images from its company files, but the majority of the material comes from its predecessor companies. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

Incorporated in Delaware in 1935, the Consolidation Coal Company formed in Maryland in 1860. In 1945, the company merged with Pittsburgh Coal Company to form Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Company. The name returned to Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) in 1958. This digital collection comprises the annual reports of the company from 1940 to 1965 as well as a corporate history published in 1934. Each report has been catalogued individually in Hagley Library's published collections.

This digital collection includes more than 7,800 images from Hagley Library's Dallin Aerial Survey Company photographs (Accession 1970.200) collection. The company specialized in aerial images of factories, private estates, schools, country clubs, towns, airports, rivers, and many other sites and some news events of the day. The majority of the photographs concentrate on the Mid-Atlantic region covering a period from 1924 to 1939 although Dallin did make trips to other locales within the United States. This digital collection also includes material from the Colonel J. Victor Dallin films (Accession 2018.226)collection. David Harrison Cope (1913-2001) held a lifelong interest in railroads. From an early age, he began a collection consisting of photographs, negatives, and eventually 35 mm slides of mostly locomotives and trains from southeastern Pennsylvania. His own photography began in the 1930s. His collection also includes images from other railfans from about 1890 to the 1960s. The David H. Cope photographs (Accession 2001.242) collection primarily consists of black and white photographs and negatives of steam locomotives from a variety of railroads, but it includes some other images as well; mostly rolling stock, station photos, street railroads, and other related railroad items. Cope also photographed and collected 35 mm color slides of his subjects, dating predominantly from the 1970s. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety, and more items may be added to this digital collection at later dates.

The David Sarnoff Library collections (Accession 2464) include the research records, the papers of individual scientists, photographs, films and sound recordings that document the research and development conducted at the David Sarnoff Research Center and other RCA facilities from the early days of the Radio Corporation of America to the David Sarnoff Research Center’s operations in the 1980s and 1990s. It also includes the original David Sarnoff papers (Accession 2464.55) collection, assembled by Sarnoff and his staff to document his career. These formed the core of the David Sarnoff Library when it opened at the David Sarnoff Research Center in Princeton in 1967. When the library closed in 2009, the archival collections were donated to Hagley and the museum objects went to The College of New Jersey. This digital collection offers a small sample material selected from the David Sarnoff Library collections at Hagley, which encompasses twenty collections and nearly 3,000 linear feet of material.

Pierre S. du Pont incorporated the Delaware School Auxiliary Association in 1919 to finance the construction of new school buildings throughout the state. Between 1918 and 1940 du Pont donated $5,000,000 to build some 120 schools. The Delaware School Auxiliary Association photographs (Accession 1969.044) collection contains photographs, almost all exterior, of 114 public elementary and secondary schools in Delaware. These include old school buildings and the new ones that replaced them in the building program instituted by Pierre S. du Pont. The Delaware State Fair was first held in Wilmington, Delaware around the turn of the twentieth century. In 1917, the Delaware State Fair Association purchased land in nearby Elsmere, where new fairgrounds were built which included racetracks for horses and automobiles, exhibition buildings, and a large parking area. In 1928, the fair moved 60 miles south to Harrington, Delaware. The Delaware State Fair albums (Accession 1991.212) collection consists primarily of two albums of photographs of the Delaware State Fair from 1919, 1920, and 1921. Subjects primarily include livestock, agricultural displays, automobile displays, arts & crafts displays, displays of various youth organizations, vendor booths, horse and car races, dog shows, and views of the crowds. The albums have not been digitized in their entirety.

When the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western (DL&W) Railroad added direct ownership of coal mining facilities to its operation in 1851, its combination of mining and transportation industries under one corporate entity gave it a market advantage. The DL&W became one of the largest and most prosperous anthracite transporting and mining companies in Pennsylvania. However, following the successfully prosecuted antitrust suit of United States v. Delaware, Lackawanna & W. R. Co. in 1915, as well as a series of antitrust actions against competitors, the DL&W voluntarily divested itself of its mining operations, which were reorganized under the Glen Alden Coal Company in 1921. The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Co. Coal Department photographs (Accession 1990.267) collection consists of dated and undated views of mining equipment, mine tunnels, and mine building exteriors and interiors in the eastern Pennsylvania counties of Lackawanna and Luzerne. Most of the views are exteriors devoid of workers. Many of the photographs include a photo credit for W. B. Bunnell, the official photographer of the DL&W.

The Disposor Corporation was incorporated on July 17, 1933. It is a foreign business corporation with headquarters in New York, New York. The Disposor Corporation was the sales agent for the General Fan Corporation of New York City in the 1930s. Ernst Glantzberg (?-1936) was the President of General Fan Corporation which manufactured the Typhoon fan and other significant heating, ventilating and cooling units. The Disposor Corporation album (Accession 2013.258) consists of fourteen photographs of various mechanical units (ventilating and cooling) on display at exhibits or installed in businesses, including a ship and restaurants. These images were put together by Disposor Corporation into a sales album. The album also includes images of various styles of grilles that the General Fan Corporation offered and three charts of various product specifications and prices. The photographs have been unbound for preservation. Six photographs are missing from the album.

Edith N. McConnell (1880-1968) was a confectioner and caterer in Wilmington, Delaware from the 1920s through the 1950s. The E.N. McConnell Restaurant photographs (Accession 1969.026) collection consists of 13 photographs, mostly dating from circa 1945, of wedding cakes, table settings, and the interior of Edith McConnell's confectionery business. Some photographs show members of bridal parties, waiters, and restaurant staff, and a few of the individuals pictured are identified. Locations shown include the Newark Country Club, Scott Church, E.N. McConnell Restaurant, Blue Cross, and the home of Miss Amy du Pont.

The Edward J.S. Seal photographic reproductions (Accession 1971.336) collection features over 300 photographs taken by the Seal family of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania during the first half of the twentieth century. Edward James Shimer Seal (1896-1955) was a farmer and photographer. The son of Howard Ellsworth Seal (1859-1940) and Annie Lincoln Shimer Seal (1864-1920), he grew up on Locust Knoll Farm in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Later in his life, Seal owned Wilmington Camera Shop in Wilmington, Delaware. Many of these images offer a glimpse into family and town life in Chadds Ford and Wilmington, Delaware during the 1920s and 1930s, featuring Seal family members, friends, neighbors, and employees. Other subjects include the 1939 World's Fair in New York, the artists N.C. and Andrew Wyeth, and local bridges and roads.

Construction began on the Eleutherian Mills Historical Library (now Hagley Library) in 1959 on the site of the Hagley Museum along the Brandywine Creek north of Wilmington, Delaware. In the summer of 1961, the holdings of the library were moved from the Peirce-du Pont House at Longwood to the newly constructed library building. The dedication ceremony for the library was held October 7, 1961. The Eleutherian Mills Historical Library Dedication audiovisual material (Accession 2011.324) collection contains material related to the dedication; a copy of the dedication booklet, an audiorecording of the ceremony, and photographs of the dedication festivities as well as exterior and interior images of the building. Most attendees photographed are identified. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety.
