The City Planning Vertical File (Accession 2184) collection was formerly part of the library of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission. The file contains pamphlets, reports, and prospectuses relating to all aspects of city and regional planning, with emphasis on transportation and other infrastructure, land use and zoning, urban renewal, housing, slum clearance, industry and commerce, central business districts and suburban shopping centers. The publications represent federal, state, regional and local government agencies, private engineering, architectural and planning consultants, quasi-public and non-profit associations, regional authorities, chambers of commerce, and university departments. The bulk of the materials date from the 1950s through the 1970s, the heyday of urban renewal and federally-sponsored planning. There are also a few developers' brochures on built or projected building complexes and industrial parks. The majority of the publications deal with Philadelphia and the surrounding counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. However, significant coverage is available for other metropolitan areas, including Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Greater New York, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.
