Fascinating project. Like taking water and splitting it into its elemental hydrogen and oxygen, OYC has created separate musical worlds. Mr. Horberry’s ‘Vol 1: At Variance’ evokes awakenings and the sun peeking over the horizon at dawn. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Mr. Hulme’s ‘Vol. 2: Into the Pleasure Garden,’ are darker dreamscapes and evoke midnight. The liner notes posit these tracks are the missing link between their untitled 10” al& Scene in Mirage, I’d add the U-side seems to point significantly to the origins of Sons of Silence and A Small, Good Thing projects via the dance beat-driven focus (here very On-U aligning to my ears. Coincidence?) as well as the vocal samples usage. I’d certainly agree the Y-side is a missing link & more recognizable foundational approach to what we commonly associate to the OYC sound. Recommended!
