С этих пор стиль Боттичелли резко изменяется, он становится аскетичным, гамма красок теперь сдержанная, с преобладанием тёмных тонов. Портреты, созданные художником в это время, например портрет Данте (около 1495), лишены пейзажных или интерьерных фонов.Особенно заметны изменения стиля при сравнении «Юдифи, покидающей палатку Олоферна» (1485—1490) с созданной приблизительно за 25 лет до того картиной на тот же сюжет.
