an image of the virgin mary holding roses in her hands and wearing a tiara

A holy card printed in 1907 for the 700th anniversary of the birth of St. Elisabeth of Hungary. (Thanks to my daughter who gave me this treasure after finding it in a village flea market during her recent trip to Italy.) St. Elisabeth of Hungary (Szent Erzsébet in Hungarian; Heilige Elisabeth in German) lived a short life (only to the age of 24), but she made such an impact that she was canonized by the Catholic Church only four years after her death. She was born over 800 years ago, but we…

Feast Day - April 29 Catherine was the 23rd child of Jacopo and Lapa Benincasa and grew up as an intelligent, cheerful and intensely religious person. Catherine disappointed her mother by cutting off her hair as a protest against being overly encouraged to improve her appearance in order to attract a husband. Her father ordered her to be left in peace and she was given a room of her own for prayer and meditation. She entered the Dominican Third Order at 18 and spent the next three years in…

St. Elizabeth was born in 1207, the daughter of King Alexander II of Hungary. At the age of four she was sent for education to the court of the Landgrave of Thuringia, to whose infant son she was betrothed. As she grew in age, her piety also increased by leaps and bounds. In 1221, she […]

a stained glass window with a woman wearing a crown

Details of the two A.J.Davies windows from the nave of the chapel. In March 2015 work began on the demolition of the Victorian chapel at Leicester Royal Infirmary, the controversial action being the first stage in an expansion of the present hospital complex. Sadly the chapel was deemed to be in the way of these plans and sacrificed, but fortunately all the stained glass windows were rescued from the building before work began. The windows were removed by Norgrove Studios of Redditch, where…

a statue of the virgin mary holding roses

November 17 is the memorial of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. St. Elizabeth of Hungary was known for her great kindness and charity towards the poor and the sick. Legend has it that she was carrying some bread to the poor in secret when her husband stopped her and asked what she was doing. She opened her apron (where she was hiding the bread) but the bread had turned into roses. This statue is in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Superior, WI.
