Alebrijes can represent fantastic animals, tonas and nahuales, which are the protective spirits connected to each person from birth, something like a guardian or twin with whom one has a magical and supernatural relationship. Copal is the wood from which alebrijes are made, is soft for carving, but resistant, and the tree must be allowed to grow for at least 6 or 7 years before being cut.
