As we head further into fall, it's becoming time to gather a different kind of harvest. I collect a number of different plants for dried arrangements, but I like to see how Mother Nature dries and preserves them. I don't really have enough room in the basement to hang and dry everything, and sometimes weathering produces much more intriguing results. If you are planning on collecting plants that are not on your own property, MAKE SURE TO GET PERMISSION. Oftentimes forest preserves, gardens…

a pile of dried plants sitting next to each other

My friends, Kim and Nora, from Abernathy and Spencer Greenhouses and Nursery stopped by this morning to take some cuttings from various lavender plants that they will start, grow and eventually sell there. They did this last year and now have some different varieties, from my plants, that they are selling this year. Making cuttings from a plant is the most reliable way to propagate lavender and I am so pleased that Abernathy and Spencer Greenhouses and Nursery find my collection of lavender…

a wreath is hanging on the window sill

There has been lots of decorating going on this week at the little yellow cottage, but I needed a wreath for our side door and it had to be somewhat flat since we have a storm door. So many wreaths are too thick and the storm door won't close. Ever have that problem? But, I thought I had a solution and it was laying on the ground in our back yard. So exciting and wonderful. ^_^ Yesterday was in the 70's outside, so we played and worked outside almost the entire day. We planted some plants, did some raking, picked up sticks, and cleaned up our yard a bit. five different types of flowers are lined up on a wooden surface, one is red and the other is green

For the past month we've been having fun watching the seed pods on our Magnolia tree change. They were the center of the flower blossom back in June, and now each pod has taken on a life of its own, Changing from these pink pods, to something more pine-cone like, once it has fallen to the ground and released its bright red seeds, The kids and I had fun collecting them to arrange in this example of the life cycle of the pod.
