a group of mannequins sitting on top of a table

You have seen them..... silently watching over a collection of brocante items lovingly arranged atop tables and shelves in a rustic French Provincial farmhouse. They are called Santos cage dolls and after becoming more and more popular over the past few years, they now are enthusiastically sought after by collectors and designers that want to add old world style to their homes. Originally started as copies of 17th century carvings by priests and called saint dolls or Santons in French…

a wooden mannequin sitting on top of a chair with text overlaying it

Have you ever had "one of those weeks"... that too quickly turned into "one of those months"? I found some time today to finally apply a coat of paper clay over the duck cloth fabric armature! I did manage (two weeks ago) to stain and add several more decorative features to the wooden cage. The arms are articulated... jointed at the shoulders, elbows and wrists. I will apply paper clay to them, and add fingers eventually. I hope to work on her face this weekend. Those are German bead eyes in…

four pictures of figurines sitting on top of a birdcage

I've got a thing for pincushion dolls...especially the Marie Antoinette and Madame Pompadour ones. Can I tell who's who? Nope. I just love them all. I decided last year that friends and family I love needed to share in my wealth of these beauties, instead of them being squirreled away in the cardboard box - after all, I bought them for that very purpose. AND, for some reason, I kept running into the same doll, over and over...and worse yet, BOUGHT HER, over and over. SO...starting two…

a doll in a birdcage with the words, the keeper of lost dolls is make - over

She has taken on a life of her own... this "Keeper of the Lost Dolls!" The paper napkin corset is out... a paper clay corset is in (or should I say "on!) Once the paper clay has dried, I will look for some vintage lace or netting in my stash and then stuff it... Well, place it... strategically to provide her with a bit of proper, 18th century lady-like modesty! (wink!) Katie helped me use her paper embossing tool and I cut some scrapbooking papers and ran them through the embosser; giving…

a wooden doll sitting on top of a stool

I believe that this 3 3/4" wooden doll with jointed arms is Gail Wilson's the "Tiny Doll No. Nine An Historical Cage Doll" that premiered in 2011. She was sold as both a tiny doll and as an ornament. ...from

a doll is dressed in white and red with a ribbon around the neck, holding onto a piece of cloth

For historical costumers, a cage crinoline is a necessity, but you may ask yourself what exactly that is. Modern lingo for this garment is “hoop skirt” which describes a skirt with hoop…

a person is working on wire work at a table with plates and utensils

It was so lovely gathering together at the house for Robin's class last weekend. I had forgotten how much I love hosting intimate parties here. It reminded me of how I began and it is always good to revisit the...

a clay figure laying on top of a wooden table

I finished the Santos cage doll I was working on. I think it turned out pretty good for a first attempt. This is "Our Lady of Fatima" It really didn't take that long to make. Had I been more diligent and worked consistently on it, I could have finished this in about 3 days total--- including drying time for the clay. But you know, life happens. *wink* I didn't follow any particular face or style of any I'd seen online while looking at the antique ones. I wanted this to be my own... I made…
