This is defined as the embodiment of Women's Mystical Power, the ability to control physical and spiritual forces, to create life through procreation and the sustenance of life. Calabash has been around for about 4,000 years therefore earning the term, "THE TIMELESS GOURD" is a symbol of womanhood, wealth and a safe. All these symbols come together to represent the pride of Africa. This epic therefore brings to light how African values are loosing it's authenticity and concrete virtues.

Anyway - I'm in zone 4a, in the 'banana belt' of the Upper Peninsula. I'd like to try my hand at growing bushel gourds in our climate, to dry and use as storage containers for dried corn and other things. . Does anybody have experience with growing them in hoop houses? If so, how did it go? How big did they get?.

a wooden bowl with decorative designs on the inside and outside, against a white background

Bowl made from half of a calabash gourd (early 19th century). The outer surface is decorated by staining the rind black and peeling away parts to leave various motifs. The decoration includes motifs around upper edge, leaf and flower style designs radiating from the base, and also small squares of applied gold leaf. The inner surface is stained a light reddish brown. You can also see the original Cuming label, which reads ‘Peru’ pasted to the top. #100Objects #CumingMuseum
