This side return garden in Balham was designed to compliment a kitchen extension and maximise the use of this lovely space.

Soft buff coloured sandstone was chosen to tonally blend in with the yellow of the ‘London stock’ brick of the house and this was used to pave the ground area and also to clad the walls of the raised planter to give a very clean look.

This is the front garden to a Victorian house in Clapham, south-west London. In the middle of the topiary bed is a standard variegated Holly. Looking back at this project I think it would have looked good to have planted a dwarf hedge along the edge of the path, in box or in Ilex crenata. There have been so many problems with box as it has been over-used and become very susceptible to disease. www.judithsharpegardens.co.uk
