Doomed & Stoned

THE DOOMED & STONED SHOW

~Season 5, Episode 43~

On this episode, we tap once again into the rich well of early American science fiction television to bring you the story of the ‘Appointment on Mars’ from Tales of Tomorrow, which ran from 1951-1953. Three astronauts arrive on the Red Planet, not to advance science as much as to search for riches – uranium, to be exact. When they find the mother lode, petty suspicions and annoyances lead to a fracture in the cohesiveness of the team, with tragic results. Is an extraterrestrial entity to blame? Find out this week on The Doomed & Stoned Show, with a selection of music by Aleph Null, Black Asteroids, Cities of Mars, Demon Head, Cosmonaut Fuzz, Electric Wizard, Holy Monitor, Jucifer, Jukebox Monkey, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and Mars Red Sky.

Cities of Mars Trips Out In Stunning Vid “Caverns Alive!”

~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~

Gothenburg heavyweights CITIES OF MARS recently blew us away with the release of their Doom Charts ranked release, ‘Temporal Rifts’ (2017 - Argonauta Records). It’s a thrilling, hard-charging album, with plenty to keep even the most jaded doomer enthralled. Imagine a Monolord meets Mastodon by way of Monster Magnet and maybe you get close to describing this far out listening experience.

Nowhere is this better illustrated than the track “Caverns Alive!” – which Doomed & Stoned is debuting for you today. It’s a part of a thrilling sci-fi epic that follows on the heels of the band’s previous EP Celestial Mistress (also illustrated by the stunning visuals of Axel Widén). I’ll not give much away of the plot, as I’d much prefer you drift off into the wide-awake fantasy realm of these tripped-out cosmonauts.

“Lyric-wise,” the band recently shared, “we are digging deep into the origins of our saga, with Doors of Dark Matter Pt 1: Barriers being the starting point of the tale that millennia later leads to the arrival of our cosmonaut Nadia in 1971.” The music video before sets the stage for this journey through time and space as we begin our forbidden journey to the ancient Cities of Mars!

Cities of Mars Reveal
Cover Art for Celestial Mistress

This is Nadia, our “current day” heroine, who lands on Mars in 1971 and discovers the ancient civilization. The Third Eye from the August single is a “Nadia-song”, while Cyclopean Ritual is based on more ancient events. The guy behind is, well, not official yet, he is however slowly appearing in the title track. He is about to be brought to life more in detail on upcoming songs.

The title track is a three-piece song, “Celestial Mistress: Worlds Collide/Gardens of Bahb-Elon/Return of the Witch.” The other two songs, “Beneath a Burning Sun” and “Gaze of Leviathan” are also included in the lower part of the poster. “Gaze” takes place right after the events of The “Third Eye,” and just before the events of Celestial. Beneath is another “older” piece that has become a staple of the band’s repertoire.

This is all crystal clear, right? Well, Gothenburg’s CITIES OF MARS are having one hell of a good time blending visual concept art with sci-fi inspired psychedelic, fuzzed-out doom to match

The saga will unfold along two major tracks - one being the events that occur when Nadia lands and finds herself caught up in this mess of a slumbering ancient civilization brought to life, and how she deals with a conspiracy that dates back for millennia. The other track will consist of a medley of songs based on major events throughout the 9000 years (thus far Cyclopean Ritual and Beneath a burning sun).

The artwork (of which you’re seeing just part) by Gothenburg-based illustrator Axel Widén will be a two-piece affair - imagine a 10" gatefold record folded out downwards (also available as a poster).

“Yes, we know it’s geeky as fuck,” bassist Danne Palm told Doomed & Stoned. “But we also love the concept to death, most fun I’ve ever had in a band.”

The producer for Celestial Mistress is Esben Willems of Monolord and Berserk Audio, and the record will be released via Gothenburg-based label Suicide Records later this month! Stay tuned for details…

Explore Cities of Mars

Discovering the Cities of Mars!

“In 1971, The Soviet Union landed a secret agent on the planet Mars. She discovered an ancient civilisation and a conspiracy from the dawn of time.” And so we are introduced to Gothenburg’s CITIES OF MARS.

I’m told Esben from Monolord engineered the recording of the band’s first track “The Third Eye” (which, incidentally, would make a nice companion to Sleep’s “Dragonaut”). I think I’m going to really dig this band’s first LP.

Thunder rolling on the plains of the red sand
Storm is howling across this dead land
mountain of the gods rise into the dark sky
spires of Bahb-Elon loom in eternal night Darkness rising from the tomb of the ancient
broken hinges on the gates of obsidian
Shadows crawl in the alleys of black stone
echoes whisper in the house of the dead crone Lights, ablaze in the sky Circles are aligning Ablaze in the sky Third eye from the world beyond
Exhumed by dark light, lord of the ages
Skies nocturnal, river of Hades
Face of the endless, alive from the slumber
Veils of time, torn asunder Third eye from the world beyond

The band has also recorded this track: “Cyclopean Rituals,” futher evidence that Cities on Mars will be a force of reckon once the invasion begins….!
