The Shang dynasty variants saw the {{zh-l|*尸}} ("body") component interchangeable with {{zh-l|*人}} ("human"); later, by the Western Zhou dynasty, {{zh-l|*尸}} variants with four dots became the dominant and sole-surviving form, however examples from this time period also exist where the {{zh-l|*尸}} component is mistaken for {{zh-l|*尾}} ("tail"), as seen in [[File:屎-bronze-3.svg|23px]]. During the Warring States period, the {{zh-l|*少}} component became corrupted<ref name=lishoukui/> into {{zh-l|*米}}.

''[[w:Shuowen Jiezi|Shuowen Jiezi]]'' does not feature the {{lang|zh|屎}} character, however it does contain {{zh-l|𦳊}} and {{zh-l|*𡕝}}. {{zh-l|*𦳊}} is listed in ''Shuowen'' as deriving from {{zh-l|*艸}} ("grass") and {{zh-l|*胃}} ("stomach"), while {{zh-l|*𡲴}} is listed as the ancient form of {{zh-l|*徙|migration}}, however in reality this is not the case; {{lang|zh|𡲴}} is an erroneous form of the {{lang|zh|屎}} variant containing {{zh-l|*尾}}, where the tail portion of the {{zh-l|*尾}} component is mistakenly written as {{zh-l|*火}}. Following transition to the [[clerical script]], a variety of alternative forms emerged:
*The 米 component was replaced with phonetic component {{och-l|矢}} thus creating the variant form {{zh-l|𡱁}};
*Some variants added another {{zh-l|*米}} radical to create {{zh-l|𥻐}} and {{zh-l|𥺶}};
*Existing variants containing the {{zh-l|*尾}} component became {{lang|zh|[[𡲔]]}} and {{lang|zh|[[𡱵]]}};
*The body portion of {{zh-l|𡲴}} also became further corrupted into {{zh-l|夂}}, creating {{zh-l|𡕝}};
*The tail portion of {{zh-l|*尾}}-based variants became corrupted into {{zh-l|巛}}, creating {{zh-l|𡲑}};
*The {{zh-l|*尸}} component corrupted into {{zh-l|*广}}, creating {{zh-l|𢈍}};
*Even the variant form {{lang|zh|𢈍}} became corrupted, where the {{zh-l|*广}} was simplified into {{zh-l|*宀}}, creating {{zh-l|*宩}}.
All of these variant forms failed to gain widespread usage, and eventually faded into obscurity while {{lang|zh|屎}} remained the dominant character variant.
