The spelling, which contradicts the pronunciation, is because {{m+|frm||-eu-}} besides {{IPAchar|/ø/}} also sometimes represented long {{IPAchar|/yː/}}. The latter cases were generally replaced with {{m|fr||-û-}} in Early Modern French, e.g. {{m|fr|dû}}, {{m|fr|flûte}} for {{m+|frm|deu}}, {{m|frm|fleute}}. However, in the case of {{m|fr||eu}} and related forms the spelling {{m|fr||û}} was considered awkward and so the Middle French form was preserved.
