Inherited from Ottoman Turkish استمك (istemek, to wish for, ask for, want, require), from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (iste-, to seek, search), from earlier *iztemek, from Proto-Turkic *īŕ-te-mek (to seek, pursue), derived from *īŕ (trace),[1] see iz (trace).

Cognate to irdelemek (to investigate), Karakhanid اِسْتاماكْ (istēmēk, to seek, pursue), Old Uyghur [script needed] (iste-, to search, investigate).
