Etymology

First attested as te attelaken in 1312-1350. Etymology unknown. Originally a hydronym composed of a term that may be related to Etten-Leur and laak (natural watercourse, drainage channel, bywash). Formerly an independent hamlet. Compare Barlaque, Eethen and Etten.
