Etymology

[edit]

New Latin, Lambl +‎ -ia, in honour of Vilém Dušan Lambl (1824 – 1895), Austrian physician, who first described Giardia for humans, which he named Cercomonas intestinalis.

Coined by Raphaël Blanchard, who placed Cercomonas intestinalis into the genus as Lambl intestinalis. It was later found to be congeneric with the amphibian parasite Giardia agilis, so Lamblia became a junior synonym of Giardia.

Proper noun

[edit]

Lamblia f

  1. (archaic) A taxonomic genus within the family Hexamitidae – now genus Giardia.
