[edit]First attested as sterkesele and sterxele in 1196-1198. Compound of either sterk (“strong, powerful”) or sterke (“young cow”) and Old Dutch sele (“hall home”). Compare Peursum, Poederoijen, Poeijers, Vaarle, Vaarsel, Varsen, Varssel, Varsselder, Varsseveld, Ten Vorsel and Bolsele.
