- In the Netherlands Westfries usually refers to a region in North Holland where Westfries, a Dutch dialect, is spoken. The West Frisian languages is usually referred to as Fries and many Dutch people are unaware of the Saterland Frisian (East Frisian) and North Frisian language. I think this is the origin of the confusion. In English, we have to differentiate between the West Frisian language and the Dutch West Frisian dialect. If this isn't done the former is usually intended. It is correct to call the West Frisian language West Frisian, but a lemma West Frisian language would be more correct, in my opinion.-195.240.97.135 15:31, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Meaning one currently states that "West Frisian" is used to refer to "Westerlauwers Frisian", which is one of the three "West Frisian" languages. I assume it's not quite what was intended.Dakhart 13:07, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

Second sense is worded poorly, someone who knows the topic should reword to ensure accuracy. - [The]DaveRoss 14:42, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

- I've fixed it a bit more. West Frisian definitely doesn't encompass all of North Holland, but only the part of it called West Friesland. —CodeCat 18:53, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Rfv-sense Proper noun sense 1 says "one of the three West Frisian languages" - are there really 3 West Frisian languages, or should this read simply "Frisian languages" ? Leasnam (talk) 19:05, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
- Wow, this error has been in the entry for a long time, introduced here. - -sche (discuss) 19:17, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
- Ok thank you ! Now fixed. Leasnam (talk) 23:03, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
- Glottolog says there are four West Frisian languages, though Wikipedia groups them into three. --RichardW57m (talk) 14:07, 16 June 2022 (UTC)
- Oh, okay Thank you ! But wouldn't we call those dialects rather than languages? Leasnam (talk) 15:01, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
- We could probably just say "one of the Frisian languages" in all these entries, that way we sidestep questions of how many there are, which seems to be of only marginal importance to the definition. - -sche (discuss) 22:12, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
- "any of several of the Frisian languages" ? -- 64.229.88.43 03:54, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
- That seems too vague. - -sche (discuss) 04:06, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

- This was detagged at some point, which seems reasonable, the issue seems resolved. (Cites are trivially available: google books:"West Frisian language".) - -sche (discuss) 04:06, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
