Uncertain. Possibly a substrate word or an expressive creation based on mamă or Latin mamilla (representing the idea of nourishment) +‎ -ică.

Alternately, it can be inherited from Latin [Term?], akin to Italian meliga (maize, sorghum), from Latin milium (millet).
