[edit]Uncertain. Possibly a substrate word or an expressive creation based on mamă or Latin mamilla (representing the idea of nourishment) + -ică.
Alternately, it can be inherited from Latin [Term?], akin to Italian meliga (“maize, sorghum”), from Latin milium (“millet”).
