[edit]Modification of earlier marrir (“to sadden”) < Frankish *marʀijan < Proto-Germanic *marzijaną (“to disturb; hinder; impede”). Influenced in form by errar (“to miss”).

[edit]Attested since the 14th century. From West West Germanic, from Proto-Germanic *marzijaną (“to disturb; hinder; impede”): compare Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐍂𐌶𐌾𐌰𐌽 (marzjan), German merren.[1]
