Etymology

From op (up) +‎ hidse (to arouse, to incense), the latter a combination of borrowings from German hitzen (to heat) and Middle Low German hissen (to drive forward, act upon).

Compare Swedish upphetsa, German aufhetzen, Dutch ophitsen.
