From Portuguese baptismo, from Old Galician-Portuguese batismo, bautismo, baptismo, borrowed from Ecclesiastical Latin, Late Latin baptismus, baptismum from Ancient Greek βαπτισμός (baptismós), from βαπτίζω (baptízō, I immerse, plunge). Compare to Turkish vaftiz.
