From a modification, based on guide, of Old French guier (compare also Old Occitan guidar, guida), of Germanic origin; e.g. Frankish *wītan, Proto-Germanic *wītaną, possibly through an Early Medieval Latin intermediary. Compare Italian guidare, Spanish guiar.
