From gallofa (food given to workers, pilgrims), perhaps from a Medieval Latin expression Galli offa, "food given to Frenchmen [Pilgrim]"; but compare Gothic Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌷𐌻𐌰𐌹𐌱𐌰 (gahlaiba, messmate) and English loaf.
