Etymology

[edit]

From Finnish hakanen (small hook).

Equivalent to haka +‎ -nen, first part from Finnish haka (hook), from Swedish haka (catch), dialectal form of hake (catch; latch), from Old Swedish haki (hook; grappling hook), from Old Norse haki, from Proto-Germanic *hakô (hook), from Proto-Indo-European *keg-, *keng- (peg; hook). Last part -nen from Finnish -nen (forms diminutives nouns or terms expressing affection), variant of -inen, from Proto-Finnic *-inën (-ish).
