Derived from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kū́ˀjas, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kewh₂- (to strike).[1] Cognate with Old Prussian cugis[1] and Proto-Slavic *kyjь (stick).[1] See also káuti (to slay).
