[edit]From Ottoman Turkish قپلان (kaplan, “leopard”). Compare Old Turkic [script needed] (kaplan). Equivalent to kap (“to snatch, seize, catch”) + -lan (suffix denoting a wild, predatory animal). Compare aslan (“lion”), yılan (“snake”), sırtlan (“hyena”). Cognate with Kazakh қабылан (qabylan), Kyrgyz кабылан (kabılan) Turkmen gaplaň.
