[edit]From Proto-Turkic *bɨńĺ(ɨk) (“cat”). Compare pisik, Azerbaijani and Turkmen pişik, Tatar песи (pesi), песәй (pesäy), Karakalpak pıshıq, Uzbek mushuk, Kyrgyz мышык (mışık), Kazakh мысық (mysyq), Kumyk мишик (mişik), Bashkir бесәй (besəy), Uyghur مۈشۈك (müshük).
Superficially similar to English puss, Romanian pisică, Arabic بَسّة (bassa), Georgian ფისო (piso), Proto-Algonquian *pešiwa, all seemingly of onomatopoeic origin from the sound used to call a cat.
