- from the o-grade ablaut of rijgen (“to baste, impale”) (visible in the past tense reeg) + a suffix, possibly the same as in desem;
- from Middle Dutch rese (whence rist (“ordened package”));
- from Middle Dutch reeseem, which is from Spanish resma, from Arabic رِزْمَة (rizma).
