route mile (plural route miles) (usually plural)

  1. (rail transport) A mile of track on a route between places.
    • 1952 January, “Notes and News: The Indian Regrouping Scheme”, in Railway Magazine, pages 62-63:
In June, 1950, therefore, the Railway Board prepared a tentative regrouping scheme, which contemplated the formation of six new railway systems, each serving a specific zone, and consisting of approximately 5,000 to 6,000 route-miles of line, the total mileage being 33,000.

Usage notes

[edit]

The measurement is for a single track. The route miles of each route can be added together to give a figure for total route miles. This is compared with track miles, which includes parallel tracks (where there are double or multiple tracks), yards, sidings and passing loops.
