Etymology
[edit]From the tiz- stem of tíz (“ten”) + -ed (fraction-forming suffix).
Pronunciation
[edit]Numeral
[edit]tized
- a tenth (one of ten equal parts of a whole)
Usage notes
[edit]Sometimes this word is misspelled as *tízed, though the latter can only express “your ten [items]”. Their pronunciation with a short i is reflected in the spelling of certain derivations (ordinal numbers, fractions, and prefixes of tens) but not in inflections or in -es and -en forms. Compare tizedik and huszadik, tizen- and huszon-, as well as huszad (“a twentieth”) and húszad (“your twenty [items]”) but tízes and húszas, tízen and húszan, all pronounced with a short vowel in the first syllable.[1]
