[edit]From Middle Dutch torsen (“to pack, load”) (compare metathesized trossen, meaning the same), from Old French torser (“to pack, bind together”) (French trousser), from Vulgar Latin *torsare, from *torsus, a variant form of tortus, the past participle of torqueō.
