Etymology 1

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wīˀtei (to chase). Cognate with Latvian vît (to subject), Proto-Slavic *povinǫti (to subordinate, subdue) (whence Russian повинова́ться (povinovátʹsja, to obey), which was borrowed from Old Church Slavonic повинѫти (povinǫti, to subject)).[1]
