Etymology
[edit]Unknown. Possibly from Proto-Iranian *makatah (“apian”), via Persian *makat. Compare with Slavic: *mečьka from *meke- (“bee”). Less popular form мақай (maqai) seems reflects adjective: *makayah (“apian”), via Persian *makay.
