    • 1883, Всеволод Гаршин, chapter III, in Красный цветок; English translation from A Red Flower, Philadelphia: Brown Brothers, 1911:
      — Вы сказали, — перебил его доктор, — что вы живёте вне времени и пространства. Однако нельзя не согласиться, что мы с вами в этой комнате и что теперь, — доктор вынул часы, — половина одиннадцатого 6-го мая 18** года. Что вы думаете об этом?

"You remarked," the physician interrupted, "that you live without space or time. However, you cannot but agree with me that we are within this room, and that now (here the doctor pulled out his watch) is half-past ten A. M., on the sixth of May, of the 18—th year. What say you to that?"

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Grammatically the word is a masculine, but it is used to refer to both a man and a woman and it is declinable in both cases. The term до́кторша f (dóktorša) is also used for a woman in colloquial Russian, but it is nonstandard.
