Etymology

Inherited from Old Ruthenian жесто́кий (žestókij), from Old East Slavic жестокъ (žestokŭ), from Proto-Slavic *žestokъ. The epenthetic 'r' might have arisen by analogy with жорстки́й (žorstkýj). Cognate with Russian жесто́кий (žestókij).
