From Proto-Iranian *ra(n)ǰ- (“to colour, dye”), from Proto-Indo-European *reg- (“to dye”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ῥέζω (rhézō, “I dye, paint”) and Sanskrit रञ्ज् (rañj, “to be dyed or coloured, to redden, grow red, glow”). Doublet of رنگ (rang, “color”).
