Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *tonꟲ² (trunk; tree; origin). Cognate with Thai ต้น (dtôn)Northern Thai ᨲᩫ᩠᩶ᨶ, Khün ᨲᩫ᩠᩶ᨶ, ᦎᦳᧃᧉ (ṫun²), Shan တူၼ်ႈ (tūun), Tai Nüa ᥖᥨᥢᥲ (tòn), Phake တုꩫ် (tun), Ahom 𑜄𑜤𑜃𑜫 (tun).
