Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (tan "accord, be suitable"). Wide variety of senses, all which MED groups together. However, there appear to be a few distinct sense groups:
  • to be worth, fit
  • to stop, cease and desist
  • worthless
  • numerical classifier for components, legs of a journey

No literature has seemed to attempt to deduce etymologies for most of these senses, save the "stop" sense. For the "stop" sense: Luce tentatively compares Old Chinese 停 (OC *deːŋ, “to stop”).[1] For the worthless sense: compare Mon တန် (“cheap”).”
