Inherited from Old Burmese ရိယ် (riy), from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *rəj¹ (water), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rəj (water; liquid; body fluid). Cognate with Pela ɣəi⁵⁵, Tangut 𗋽 (*zjɨ̱r²), and Tshangla ri¹³ (STEDT).

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/s-k-rəj (skin). Cognate with Tibetan སྐྱི (skyi, outer skin) (STEDT), as well as, according to Luce, Old Chinese (OC *kril, “skin; muscle”).[1] STEDT also compares (OC *kreːds, “shell; to lie between”).
