Etymology 1

/kurejo/ → */kurej/ → /kurei/ → /kureː/ → /kure/

From earlier くれい (kurei).

One theory suggests a sound change from くれよ (kureyo), dropping the last vowel, from original kureyo to kurey (= kurei). Compare せい (sei), 来(こ)い (koi).
