Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *tos) : semantic (horse) + phonetic (OC *tjoʔ). Cf. (zhù), with the radical replacing .

Etymology

Possibly from Proto-Sino-Tibetan, with *-s nominalization or stative suffix. (OC *tod) is a likely cognate via causative formation. (Jin, 2004)
