History

The team was founded in 1950, in their first season they finished as 3rd (equal points with the champion MAFC and the runner-up Vasas), then in the next 18 seasons they won 17 championship (in 1956 they finished unbeaten as runner-up because of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956), from 1951 to 1960 they lost only one match, between 18 October 1954 and 6 October 1960 none.

Between 1970 and 1975 they won only 2 more championships, then between 1976 and 1986 they dominated the champoinship again won all championships. In the next 6 seasons they finished once as runner-up and twice as 3rd.

In 1992 the 3rd Budapesti Honvéd merged with the 4th Tungsram, and they dominated once again the champioship: in the next 5 seasons they won 4 champioships (2 as Danone Honvéd due sponsorship reasons). In 1998 they finished as runner-up, and that's the last medale earned by a basketball team placed in Budapest. In 1999 and 2000 they finished in the 10th place, in 2001 they were 11th in the regular season, but they fall out in the playout.

In the FIBA European Champions Cup they finished 3rd in 1958, played quarter-finals in 1958–59. Later they played several times, but were not successfull. 5 Honvéd-player were in the runner-up national team in the EuroBasket 1953 and in the winner team in the EuroBasket 1955.
